in the stories, trolls were big and ugly creatures. they often lived in dark places, like caves and forests.
there was a famous story where there were three goats er, hoofbeasts were crossing a bridge. but when the youngest one tried to cross, a troll came from under the bridge and told him that he was hungry and wanted to gobble him up. the young goat said "don't eat me, there's a bigger goat coming after me." and the troll said "alright, you may pass." and then the second goat crossed, and when the troll said he wanted to feed on him, the second goat said the same thing as the first one and the troll let him pass.
the last goat came across and he was certainly a big goat. and when the troll moved forward to eat him, the goat just tossed him far away with his large horns. thus the goats lived happily ever after.
